something small

I can fit myself into

a poem

the muffled

clinking of

coins in my pocket

when I hang my coat

in the empty apartment

a piece of music

the weather

like a piece a part

the grey clouds

the cold

who I am

to survive

the smallest component

to survive

where I can put

a song

mine

an outward-reaching

the small things

the small living things

I become

a poem

to carry myself forward

in order to love

time transformed

in the sounds

my own mouth

my own hands

to survive

the writing

to survive

the colours

not deftly

but to survive

live

continue

the poem

in the poem’s hand

here

I will believe

an upward-rising

in the night

his voice

the voice that

offered shelter

and later destruction

a divulgence

a bird’s body

against the grey clouds

physical pain

a swath of fabric

red with

yellow flowers

human-drawn

like a letter

these things

that hold me

the black table

the white closet

the red dresser

the hint of rot

along the leaves’ edges

a footstool

a piece of chewing gum

the balcony

he seldom speaks

of forgiveness

where am I

if not here

held up

by the object poem

a poem

to stay

where I am standing

without purpose

must continue

like the pocket’s darkness

unseen homelike

but alive

among all

these things

in their

endless lives

continue

among them

like the poem itself

I carry

forward

I carry

to stay

without

destruction

I put myself

into each and every thing

around me

in the empty apartment

alive

who I am

among those

those who are not

human

who hold me up

toward the world

the blossoming trees

by the bicycles

where the child ran about

and spoke of the branches

the petals on the ground

between the wheels

like me

I should

not hate

what holds me in place

what separates me

but carry it

face

forward

love it

believe

the child disappears

into the nursery school
